Boston Sweeps Novice, Junior and Senior at 2019 National Theatre On Ice

Forte of Boston upset Harmony Theatre Company's win streak at the senior level.

The National Theatre On Ice competition returned to Birmingham, Alabama, for the second time since 2016, where 82 teams and more than 1,300 skaters gathered at the Pelham Civic Complex from June 26-29.

The Skating Club of Boston swept the novice, junior and senior titles and medaled in every event they competed in.

Senior

Forte of Boston won the senior competition by about nine points.

For the first time since 2014, Harmony Theatre Company was upset for the senior title, with Forte of Boston taking home its first-ever senior gold medal at National Theatre On Ice. Skating to a flamenco-themed choreographic exercise and a free program to "Rhapsody in Blue" by Gershwin, Forte scored 140.75 points, winning the competition by a margin of about nine points.

Finishing in second, Harmony Theatre Company skated an engaging free program featuring music from The Pirates of the Caribbean to score 131.05 overall points.

Los Angeles Ice Theatre performed a breathtaking free program to "Fall on Me" by Andrea and Matteo Bocelli to grab the bronze medal with 127.22 points. After finishing behind following the choreographic exercise, the team was able to to close the overall gap, with its free program score only .18 behind Harmony.

Rounding out the podium was Creative Ice Theatre, whose program centered around the themes of individual experience, human nature and relationship to score 106.25 overall points and secure the pewter medal.

Junior

Coming off a silver medal finish at the 2019 Nations' Cup, Act 1 of Boston skated with confidence to win the junior event with 94.49 points. The team used a remix of Beethoven's Scherzo in a medley of pieces to tell the story of young sorcerers exploring their mystical abilities.

Last year's junior champions, Harmony Theatre Company, placed silver this year, performing a Disney villain-themed program to score 92.71 total points. For the seventh year straight, San Francisco Ice Theatre medaled in the junior division, finishing third this year with 89.11 points. Skating to "Blue Danube Waltz," the team's performance highlighted their footwork and use of smaller group skating.

Skating to Cats, the Space Coast Hurricanes performed a strong free program to score 79.88 overall points, earning the pewter medal.

Novice

Coming off their recent win in the novice division of the 2019 Nations Cup in Epinal, France, Encore of Boston came into the event as favorites and won the event with 88.43 points. Skating to a medley of Woodkid songs, including "Run Boy Run," the team performed sit spins, cantilevers and Axels on its way to the top of podium.

Performing as a group of clowns chasing a hat, Harmony Theatre Company grabbed silver with a whimsical program that earned them 80.29 total points. Medaling for the first time was the Chesapeake Sapphires, who performed a lyrical Four Seasons program to score 75.05 overall.

San Francisco Ice Theatre finished fourth with 71.85 points for their magician's workshop-themed free program.

Intermediate

The Space Coast Hurricanes won the intermediate level.
Twenty-two teams competed at the intermediate level at this year's National Theatre On Ice, making it the largest division of the competition. Last year's preliminary gold medalists, the Space Coast Hurricanes, moved up to intermediate for the 2019 competition and won again, taking home the gold for their Haunted Mansion program. The team's strong group cohesion helped boost them above the competition, earning 61.41 total points.

Magic City Theatre On Ice, another new team at the intermediate level, took the silver on home ice. Its circus-themed program earned 57.36 overall points. Pulling up from sixth place after the choreographic exercies, Ice Academy


Productions performed to "Masquerade Waltz" to score 56.68 overall.

In their first year competing at National Theatre On Ice, Las Vegas Ice Theatre surprised for the pewter medal. Its program about a bee born without wings earned 53.46 total points.

Preliminary

Skating to music from the Broadway musical, High Button Shows, San Francisco Ice Theatre won the preliminary title with a dynamic performance and a total score of 48.41. In fourth after the choreographic exercise, Center Stage of Boston performed group lifts, jumps in unison and highlighted interactions between team members during the free skate to grab the silver medal with 42.90 overall points.

Harmony Theatre Company showcased a Wizard of Oz program to score 40.99 overall and finish in third place overall. Creative Ice Theatre rounded out the podium with 40.85 points following its Pokemon-themed program.

Open

Skating on home ice, Magic City Theatre On Ice repeated as open-level champions, skating to an Aladdin-themed program. The team showcased its musicality and theatricality to score 58.59 total points.

In fifth place after the choreographic exercise, the North Shore Crystal Blades won the free program to score 56.04 points overall and earn second place with their program set to "To Build a Home." Yarmouth Ice Theatre came alive with The Greatest Showman to score 52.15 overall and finish third.

Ice Theatre of the Rockies skated to a Rosie the Riveter theme to score 49.20 total points and earn the pewter medal.

Adult

Harmony Theatre Company added to its medal collection this year, repeating as adult champions at 2019 National Theatre On Ice. Skating to Chaplin, the team showcased strong skating skills to earn 64.72 total points. Creative Ice Theatre interpreted a modern version of Cinderella to score 55.86 overall and earn silver.

Imagica of Boston finished third with a 50.42 total points and a free program set to music from Amadeus. Space Coast Frozen Hurricanes disguised as Disney villains to earn 49.29 points and finish fourth.

Special Olympics

Virginia Ice Theatre won the Special Olympics division.
Virginia Ice Theatre won the Special Olympics event with its program set to "Never Enough" from The Greatest Showman. Its free program featured themes of friendship and being yourself, boosting its score to 26.32 points overall.

Chicagoland Ice Theatre skated a World War II- and baseball-themed program to take home silver with 26.06 total points. Bravo Unified skated to a circus program to score 25.26 points overall and finished with the bronze medal.
