Team USA Earns Three Medals at Skate Canada International

The United States earned three medals to close Skate Canada International on Saturday night in Vancouver. The event was the second stop of the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Series. Nathan Chen won the men's event while Jason Brown picked up the silver medal. Ashley Cain-Gribble and Timothy LeDuc earned the bronze medal in the pairs event.

Chen captured the men's title in Vancouver, winning the short program and free skate to collect 307.18 total points. In his Mozart free skate, the three-time World champion completed four quadruple jumps and earned 200.46 points. The win marks his eighth Grand Prix Series title and 10th Series medal.

Brown earned the silver medal in the men's event with 259.55 points. The 2014 Olympic bronze medalist finished second in the short program and third in the free skate. His Schindler's List program earned 165.55 points and included three Level 4 spins.

Tomoki Hiwatashi finished 11th overall, earning 148.85 points for his free skate and 221.77 overall.

Russia's Evgeni Semenenko claimed the bronze medal with 256.01 total points.

Cain-Gribble and LeDuc came back from a tough short program to claim the bronze medal in the pairs competition. The 2019 U.S. champions were sixth after the short program and rallied back to finish second in the free skate. Their 128.22-point program included two strong throws, a triple Lutz and triple Salchow. With a total score of 189.90, the team picked up their second career Grand Prix medal.

China's Wenjing Sui and Cong Han won the gold medal (224.05), and Russia's Daria Pavliuchenko and Denis Khodykin grabbed the silver medal (193.08).

In the ice dance competition, Caroline Green and Michael Parsons placed fourth overall with 186.51 points. Their 114.11-point free dance featured Level 4 twizzles and all positive grades of execution. Their fourth-place finish marks their best Grand Prix result. 

Christina Carreira and Anthony Ponomarenko finished eighth in the competition with a total score of 168.76 points. Their free dance to "Wicked Game" by Daisy Gray and Yola Recoba earned 99.80 points. 

Canada's Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier won the event with 210.97 points, followed by Charlene Guignard and Marco Fabbri of Italy in second (200.05), and Spain's Olivia Smart and Adrian Diaz in third (192.93). 

Alysa Liu led Team USA in the women's event, finishing fifth in her Grand Prix debut with a total score of 206.53 points. The two-time U.S. champion earned 132.90 points for her free skate, which included five triple jumps and three Level 4 spins. 

Karen Chen finished 10th in the competition with a total score of 183.41 points and a 114.67-point free skate.

Russia swept the women's podium with Kamila Valieva winning gold (265.08), Elizaveta Tuktamysheva taking silver (232.88) and Alena Kostornaia earning the bronze medal (214.54).
