Six U.S. Synchronized Skating Teams to Compete at Mozart Cup

The international synchronized skating season continues this weekend with six teams representing the United States at the Mozart Cup in Salzburg, Austria, Jan. 19-21.

Two senior and two junior teams will compete in the second Challenger Series event of the 2022-23 season. Both members of last year's World Championship team, the Haydenettes and Miami University will represent the United States in the senior competition, and Skyliners junior and the Lexettes will compete in the junior division. The Crystallettes and Hayden Select will round out Team USA in the senior elite 12 competition.

The Haydenettes, which are five-time World Synchronized Championships bronze medalists, are looking for their first Challenger Series medal since earning silver at the 2019 California Cup. The 29-time U.S. champions finished fifth at the ISU World Synchronized Skating Championships 2022 last season.

Three-time U.S. champions, Miami University hope to earn their first-ever Challenger Series medal. The team ended their 2021-22 season with a sixth-place result at the 2022 World Synchronized Championships.

In the junior competition, Skyliners junior enters as the reigning World Junior silver medalists. The team is hoping to earn their second Challenger Series medal in their first international appearance this season after earning silver at the 2019 California Cup in the junior division.

Joining them in the junior competition is the Lexettes. The 2020 Spring Cup bronze medalists will compete in their first Challenger Series event this season.

Rounding out the competition in the senior elite 12 division are the Crystallettes and Hayden Select.

The 2022-23 season marks the first official season for the senior elite 12 division. In this new division, skaters will compete in teams of 12 as opposed to the traditional 16.

The Crystallettes, previously a senior team based out of Michigan, will compete in their first competition as a senior elite 12 team.

Hayden Synchro's newest team, Hayden Select, will compete in their first event of the season. Last season, the team won gold at the 2022 French Cup, which was an exhibition event for the new senior elite 12 division.

The senior elite 12 competition will be held in conjunction with the senior and junior events but is not part of the Challenger Series for this event.

Competition begins on Friday, Jan. 20, with the short program for the senior, junior and senior elite 12 divisions, and concludes Saturday, Jan. 21 with the senior, junior and senior elite 12 free skates.

The Challenger Series, which began in 2019-20, consists of up to five international competitions linked together to give adequate opportunities for teams to compete at the international level, earn World Standing Points and prepare for competing at the ISU Championships.
