Levito, Kam and O’Shea Secure Medals; Malinin Storms To Short Program Lead At Skate Canada

Carreira and Ponomarenko Place Third In Rhythm Dance

The U.S. earned two medals on the second day of Skate Canada International and are in position to secure two more on Sunday.

Isabeau Levito delivered an inspiring free skate to collect the silver medal on Saturday night, while the pairs team of Ellie Kam and Danny O'Shea rallied to claim the bronze medal. Ilia Malinin took a commanding lead in the short program, while the veteran ice dance team of Christina Carreira and Anthony Ponomarenko are third after the rhythm dance.

Skate Canada International in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, marks the third of six ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Series events.

Levito finished second in the segment with a score of 137.97 en route to an overall total of 209.77 points. She skated to "Cinema Paradiso" by Ennio Morricone. Her layback spin and step sequence earned Level 4s. Her program component score of 71.03 was just .10 points behind the event winner's score.

Levito placed fourth at the opening ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating event in France. She's now earned a total of six Grand Prix Series medals.

Bradie Tennell posted a free skate score of 129.52 to place fourth in the segment; she finished with 195.07 points and fourth place overall.

The 2025 U.S. pewter medalist, skating to music from The Mission soundtrack by Ennio Morricone, received Level 4s for two of her spins.

She'll wrap up her Grand Prix season later this month at Finlandia Trophy.

Sarah Everhardt finished ninth in the free skate with a score of 111.12 and seventh overall at 174.59. The reigning U.S. bronze medalist performed to music from the "Poor Things" soundtrack by Jerskin Fendrix.

She'll also compete next weekend at NHK Trophy.

Malinin, the two-time and reigning World champion, continued his torrid pace by easily winning the short program at the SaskTel Centre.

Malinin is now in a commanding position to qualify for next month's ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final, in which he is the two-time and reigning Grand Prix Final champion. Malinin won the first Grand Prix event this season at Grand Prix de France by more than 40 points.

Winner of 11 consecutive individual competitions, Malinin once again showcased his remarkable skills by performing a nearly flawless program to "Dies Irae" by Náttúra featuring Vila and "The Lost Crown" by 2WEI, Josnez and Kataem. His score of 104.84 is 12.77 points more than the second-place skater.

Malinin opened with a soaring quad flip worth 14.93 points; the grade of execution on the jump was 3.93. His other major jumping pass — a quad Lutz-triple toe loop combination — generated 17.60 points. He received Level 4s for his spins and footwork.

He will attempt to sew up the title Sunday in the men's free skate.

His U.S. teammate, Tomoki Hiwatashi, competing in back-to-back Grand Prix Series events, placed ninth with a score of 84.32. He finished fourth last weekend at Cup of China.

Hiwatashi performed his "Free Bird" program, landing an opening quad toe loop for 11.81 points with a program-best grade of execution of 2.31. He also received Level 4 for two spins.

U.S. bronze medalists Kam and O'Shea produced a personal best free skate score of 133.63 — second best in the segment — and rallied to earn the bronze medal in pairs.

They jumped from fourth after the short program to the podium with an overall score of 199.11.

Kam and O'Shea have now earned medals at their last three Grand Prix Series events.

The duo, who teamed up in the fall of 2022, performed a nearly clean program to a Cinematic Pop medley. Their routine included a pair of Level 4 lifts, a Level 4 spin and a successful throw triple loop.

They will look for a possible return to the Grand Prix Final when they take the ice at Finlandia Trophy later this month.

In ice dance, Carreira and Ponomarenko put themselves in medal contention with a third-place finish in the rhythm dance.

The two-time and reigning U.S. silver medalists posted a score of 76.83. Skating to "Sweet Dreams" by La Bouche and "100% Pure Love" by Crystal Waters, the Canada-based team earned Level 4s for their opening sequential twizzles and rotational lift.

Partners since 2014, Carreira and Ponomarenko are looking for their third consecutive Grand Prix medal dating back to last season.

Their U.S. teammates, Leah Neset and Artem Markelov and Emily Bratti and Ian Somerville, finished ninth and 10th, respectively, posting scores of 65.51 and 63.22.
