Began skating at the ages of 4 (Maia) and 7 (Alex) ... Began partnership in 2004 when Maia was 9 and Alex was 12 ... Have edaled at the U.S. Championships for 14 consecutive years, at every level and every year that they competed ... Voted SKATING Magazine Readers' Choice Award winners in 2016 ... Are two-time PSA Edy Award winners ... Became the first ice dancers who are both of Asian descent to medal at the Olympic Games ... They are the second sibling duo to ever share an ice dance Olympic medal and the first from the United States.
PERSONAL NOTES
Both graduated from Huron High School (Ann Arbor) in 2009 and 2012 ... Serve as sports envoys for the U.S. State Department, and have twice been guests of the Secretary State and the Vice President at U.S. State Department functions honoring the Prime Minister of Japan ... Both were members of the Athletes' Advisory Commission for the LA2024 Summer Olympics bid organization ... Maia is a two-time recipient of the Women's Sports Foundation's Travel and Training Grant (2012, 2014) ... Both are Athlete Ambassadors for Right to Play and Figure Skating in Harlem and support The Jimmy Fund, The ONE Fund and Charity Water.
