In their 12th year together, Chock and Bates took their career to new heights and cemented their place in the history books as one of the best ice dance teams in U.S. history.

Chock and Bates medaled at every competition they competed at this season. After winning gold at 2022 Skate America and silver at the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final 2022, the three-time Olympians as a couple won their fourth U.S. title. At the ISU World Figure Skating Championships 2023, Chock and Bates became just the second U.S. ice dance team to ever earn gold and the oldest couple to win the event, tying the U.S. record for most World ice dance medals with their fourth podium finish. Weeks later, they broke the world record for the highest-ever rhythm dance and free dance scores at 2023 World Team Trophy.

The AAU James E. Sullivan Award is given out each year to the nation's best athlete in collegiate athletics, Olympic pursuit or similar high-profile competitions, recognizing their outstanding athletic accomplishments on the national and/or international stage as well as the qualities of leadership, character and sportsmanship.

The winner of the award will be determined through a second voting period with the six finalists from August 9 through August 16.
